The collection, a portion of the papers of Henry Shelton Sanford, contains correspondence, business records, memoranda, and other material concerning Sanford's activities in the Belgian Congo, his plantations in Louisiana and South Carolina, and politics and government in Florida. The Belgian Congo papers concern the African International Association; the Brussels Anti-Slavery Conference; the Sanford exploring expedition, 1886-1887; and contain a copy of Henry M. Stanley's manuscript, "From Black River to Stanley Pool." The bulk of the papers relate to Barnwell Island plantation, South Carolina; Oakley Sugar Plantation, Iberville, Louisiana, and Florida politics, 1872-1885.

Henry Morton Stanley, in full Sir Henry Morton Stanley, also known as John Rowlands, also known by his Congolese byname Bula Matari, or Breaker of Rocks. Stanley was born on January 28, 1841, Denbigh, Denbighshire, Wales. He died on May 10, 1904, London, England. He was a British American explorer of central Africa, who became famous for his rescue of the Scottish missionary and explorer David Livingstone and for his discoveries in and development of the Congo region. Diplomat. Secretary of Legation in Paris, 1849 to 1854; Minister Resident to Belgium 1861 to 1867. Authored books on international systems of penal codes. Known as "General" because of his enrollment as a major-general in the Minnesota militia during the Civil War, in recognization of his gift of a pair of field pieces to the 1st Minnesota Volunteers.
